Strong winds and heavy rain made for a very challenging race on Sunday, so congratulations to the 73 paddlers who braved the conditions! This year’s SunSmart Paddle Challenge was held slightly later than usual due to the 2019 Oceania & Australian Canoe Marathon Championships, so it seems like many seasoned-marathon paddlers are still in recovery mode.
Thank you to the Deputy Mayor of the City of Bayswater, Chris Cornish for opening the event and acknowledging the traditional owners of the land during the briefing.
Also thank you to the City of Bayswater for their ongoing support in assisting Paddle WA in running events like these.
The K2’s, K3 and SUPs went off on the first grid, which was started early due to the heavy tailwind that picked up. Some doubles reached speeds of over 21km/h on the start. The second grid started two minutes later, comprising of all single craft. The final grid of all 11km racers went off 2.5 minutes later.
Josh Kippin won the Open Male K1 class in a time of 1:21:29, more than 3 minutes ahead of the next fastest paddler. William Lee won the 35+ MK1 in 1:24:35, with the K2 team of Matthew and Nicholas Greed winning their class in 1:25:31. A special mention goes to Jason Bingham who completed the full 18km in a C1, finishing in front of some kayaks with a time of 1:50:00!
Amanda Bowman won the female K1 class by over five minutes in 1:37:01. Amanda will be competing at the Canoe Marathon World Championships in China later this year. Second place went to Angelina Good-Gerne, and third went to Emily Cook. In the 11km short course, Hana Vanek won 1st place by just a few milliseconds, with Harriet Brown in 2nd place. Despite stopping to help another paddler back into their boat, Clare Pankhurst finished in 3rd place.
We hope that class winners like the new Paddle WA branded prizes that had their debut at the event! 1st place won a Paddle WA Turkish towel, 2nd place received a Paddle WA glass coffee mug, while third won a pair of Paddle WA tie downs! In future Paddle WA-run events, these (and other prizes yet to be revealed…) will be replacing the old system of prize money for class winners. This was a decision made by the Paddle WA Board so that we can continue to run these events while maintaining financial stability.
Paddle WA would like to thank all the volunteers who did an enormous amount of work to make the 2019 SunSmart Paddle Challenge possible. Special mentions go to Warren Southwell who collected, delivered and set up the safety boats, and to Sue McDougall who timed the event and helped presentations and pack-up straight after finishing her work! Also thank you to all the parents who willingly assisted us on the day with various jobs, it’s fantastic to have so many volunteers in the WA paddling community. Finally, thank you to Bayswater Paddlesports Club for organising the BBQ for all competitors.
