Ascot Kayak Club & the Northam Avon Descent Association have teamed up to deliver the official Avon Descent Safety & Competency Assessments, run by local whitewater legends Terry Bolland and Terry Brooke.
Whitewater Safety & Competency Skills
Demonstrate defensive swimming techniques
Demonstrate aggresive swimming techniques
Identify potential hazard when swimming in moving water
Adopt the correct body position to prevent and minimise injury
Demonstrate ferry gliding
Demonstrate breaking in and out of eddies
Identify techniques to actively free oneself from river hazards (and demonstrate in controlled simulations)
Demonstrate the ability to wade across thigh-deep currents, both alone and with support, to self-rescue
Demonstrate craft re-entry
Elect a method of re-entry after consideration of physical ability, type of craft and situational variances
Note: this is not a complete list. Assessment and determination of competency is at the discretion of the assessor.

Please bring your own equipment (kayak, paddle, life jacket, helmet, footwear, warm clothing, spray deck if in a kayak)
